Captain Willem Barentsz was a Dutch navigator and explorer with a penchant for perilous voyages. Towards the end of the 16th Century, Barentsz undertook a series of expeditions into the great frozen seas of the North, using ships and equipment we would consider wholly unsuitable for a Summer crossing to the Isle of Wight.
Inevitably, pretty much everything he encountered tried to kill him, and the conditions he endured could best be described as ‘character building’. Aside from perhaps England’s own Sir Ranulph Fiennes, it is safe to say they don’t make ‘em like that anymore.
Captain Barentsz’s exploits captured the imagination of a chap called Michael Claessens, who decided to create a small batch, pot-distilled London gin, infused with jasmine flowers, and name it in the Dutch explorer’s honour – Willem Barentsz Gin.
The Flight Club Cocktail Competition
In keeping with the spirit of adventure and derring-do, Willem Barentsz Gin would like you to create a cocktail inspired by your own vision of a great adventure. This will obviously be different for everyone – one person might consider climbing Everest to the be the ultimate adventure, for someone else it could be touring the world with a band. The important thing here is to identify your own vision, then create a cocktail that somehow expresses it.
Once the entry deadline has passed, the cocktails will be made and tasted, and six finalists invited to compete for a judging panel comprising of BarLifeUK, Emma Stokes (aka Gin Monkey), and brand owner Michael Claessens. The ultimate winner will spend a day being spoiled with top-notch hospitality before climbing into an aeroplane with Michael Claessens, and once a suitable altitude is achieved, they will then jump out of it (strapped to someone who knows one end of a parachute from the other, naturally).
In very classy move, Willem Barentsz Gin will pay for the travel of anyone coming to the competition from outside London, and BarLifeUK salute them for it, because not enough brands do so. Also, anyone wishing to sample Willem Barentsz Gin can request a miniature by sending an email to Lucy Francis.
Rules and Entry
To enter, fill out the form below. You will be asked to submit a paragraph explaining the thought process behind your adventure and cocktail (no more than 200 words). Short video clips of 60 seconds or less can also be submitted.
- Your cocktail should include a minimum of 35ml Willem Barentsz Gin
- Please provide a detailed recipe and method
- You must be over 18 years of age and a UK-based bartender to enter this competition
