A few months ago, BarLifeUK put out a request for seminar subjects which bartenders would like covered at London Cocktail Week’s new trade hub, The Bartender Edit.

BarLifeUK - London Cocktail Week 2017: The Bartender Edit Seminar ScheduleNot only did we receive a lot of excellent seminar suggestions, we also heard from members of the trade volunteering to speak about their area of expertise, or subjects particularly close to their heart.

As a result, we have been able to put together two days of unbranded sessions that address subjects requested by the trade. The seminars are free to all, simply register your intention to attend by filling out the form below, so that we can keep an eye on numbers.

The Bartender Edit Schedule:

Tuesday, October 3rd.

11:00 – 11.45am – Ice Workshop, with Carlos Pinto
Carlos will show you how even smaller bars with limited space can work with block ice. He will demonstrate how the right tools and techniques make cutting blocks and carving cubes, balls and diamonds accessible to every bar, and show you how to work with ice without losing any fingers.

12:45 – 1.30pm – How kindness, empathy and life balance can change the industry, with Dr. Frazer McGlinchey PhD
Dr Frazer wants to help you look after yourself. This session will provide tools and tips for the evolution of the industry as a healthier, happier place. He will discuss inspiration and hacks for individuals, and ways for hospitality to evolve as a kinder, more compassionate community, along with real-life ways to sustain and nurture yourselves and the people around you, with humour and humility.

2:30 – 3:15pm – A Sustainable Approach to Running Your Bar, with Tom Soden
Tom Soden, owner of Nine Lives bar, will discuss the ever-more pressing subject of sustainability in bars, and how efforts to be environmentally responsible can also make commercial sense. Technology, kit, and working practices come together to provide real-world, useable advice for the bartender or operator who wants to save the planet.

4:15 – 5:15pm – Cocktail Menu Creation, with Richard Tring and Chelsie Bailey
Richard Tring and Chelsie Bailey are, for BarLifeUK’s money, two of the best bar minds in the UK. Between them they have won a staggering number of cocktail competitions, and are known for creating drinks with a strong link to their home city of Bristol, and its history and produce. In this session, they discuss their approach to building a cocktail menu.

Thursday 5th

11:00 – 11:45am – American Whiskey Ambassador Panel
We bring a group of American Whiskey’s top ambassadors together for a panel discussion on the sector. This is your opportunity to ask any questions you have about production methods, points of difference between brands, and anything else you want to know about this complex category. This session is perfect for anyone who wants to prepare for any of the American Whiskey comps that are looming on the horizon.

12:30 – 1.30pm – Cocktail Conversations, with Ben Reed
Would bartenders make good hostage negotiators? Ben Reed in conversation with the only negotiator to have ever worked for both the NYPD and Scotland Yard. Ben’s Cocktail Conversations events are informal, interactive, inspirational and served with cocktails, conversations and characters. In this special event for London Cocktail Week, he’ll be sharing the 3 things all top drinks industry professionals should know about the ‘Art of Hostage Negotiation’ and there are just 10 places for bartenders available through The Bartender Edit.

2:30 – 3.15pm – Using Tea in Cocktails, with Ajit Madan & Matthew Dakers
Ajit Madan is the UK’s first ITEI Master Tea Sommelier, and his passion is to elevate tea culture in the U.K by developing tea innovation and combining tea with other beverages and foods. He is joined by Jindea Gin creator, Mathew Dakers, for a session that will help bartenders understand tea as a sector and cocktail ingredient.

4:15 – 5:15pm – Panel Discussion –  ‘After Bartending’
Whether it be dodgy knees, a disgruntled partner, or just a general desire to see more daylight, some bartenders decide it’s time to stop slinging drinks. But how do you take the skills and experienced gained behind the bar and use them in the daywalker world? We bring together a panel of individuals who have done just that, so you can pick their brains and learn from their experiences.

Register to attend

The Bartender Edit sessions are free to anyone who works in the UK trade, simply register your desire to attend by filling out the short form below.
