Diplomatico World Tournament Global Winner Announced

The recent Diplomatico World Tournament final in Venezuela proved that not only does the country produce great rum but also great bartenders.

The UK heats of the competition produced a massive response and superb drinks throughout. The UK final was a hotly contested affair with Jon Lister from Purl taking the win and the spot in the global final in Diplomatico’s home of Barquisimeto, Venezuela.

Jon was joined by 14 other equally talented bartenders from across the globe for a final taking place over 3 days featuring 4 challenges.

First up was the dreaded mystery box challenge with bartenders given just 5 minutes to create a drink from the unknown ingredients. Next up came a twist on a classic followed by the task of creating their own modern classic cocktail.

As if impressing the judging panel of Attaboy, New York owner Michael McIlroy, Connaught bars Ago Perone, Geoffrey Caniloa of Copenhagen’s The Union and Hamish Smith of Drinks International wasn’t enough, the final round was also beamed live online around the world.

This round was hosted by some guy called Ian Burrell and saw them having to make their signature serve cocktail – the drink which won them their place in the final.

Third place and a check for US$1,000 went to Australia’s Daniel Warren. Second spot and US$2,500 was awarded to Matteo Zamberlan from Italy. However the winner of the title and US$5,000 was local lad Anthony Medina.

Michael McIlroy had this to say ‘What a tournament: such great competitors from all four corners of the world showing us what they do best. It was a pleasure to co-judge with some amazing people. Congrats to Mr. Medina, a worthy winner in all our eyes.’

The last word however should go to the winner of this superb competition, Anthony Medina ‘For me to win this tournament is a dream come true! I want to thank those who believed in me. Never forget that in Venezuela there is talent, great strength and potential.’
