News has reached the desk (or bar as the case may be) of BarLifeUK that Hayman’s Distillers have added a Sloe Gin to their already impressive portfolio which includes a London Dry Gin, Old Tom Gin and 1820 Gin Liqueur.
Hayman’s Sloe Gin has actually been around for a while but the family recipe has previously only been available for private use (the crafty folk). Christopher Hayman let us know that “I have been making Sloe Gin at home for many years and it has always been our intention to add this wonderful drink to our portfolio. Sloe Gin has many followers and is considered a truly traditional English drink which appeals to all ages in either cocktails or simply served on its own.”
As we all know Sloe Gin is made from Sloe Berries but did you know that they are a type of wild plum (well we didn’t) and are the fruit of the blackthorn tree. Slow Gin has been around since the 19th Century and although it was originally seen as a digestif it has been an important cocktail ingredient since the days of Harry Johnson’s ‘Bartenders Manual’ of 1882 and used in classics such as the Sloe Gin Fizz and The Blackthorn. More recently the legend that is Dick Bradsell created the Wibble using Slow Gin.
