A London speakeasy has been named the best bar in the world, according to an industry poll.
For the second year running, Milk & Honey in London’s Soho has been voted number one by bartenders around the world.
This year, the World’s 50 Best Bars were voted for by 700 bar professionals from 50 countries. The annual poll is conducted independently on behalf of Drinks International magazine.
Six UK bars made it into the top 50, five of which are in London.
However, the top ten was dominated by New York, with PDT (Please Don’t Tell) at number two, Milk & Honey New York at four, Pegu Club at six, Death & Co at seven and Employees Only at eight. They were joined by Harry’s Bar in Venice at number three, Buddha Bar in Paris at number five, Harry’s New York Bar, Paris at number nine and the Academy in London’s Soho at number ten.
Milk & Honey is owned by Match Group founder Jonathan Downey. He said a great bar is made by: “The people who go there and the people who work there”. General Manager, Durham Atkinson, when asked what makes Milk & Honey so great, said: “It’s the lack of complacency. It’s important to our future success that we continue to question everything we do and give it meaning.”
Supplement editor Tom Sandham said: “What we find is a fine selection of historic stalwarts, relatively new venues that truly stand out and have done for a few years now, as well as some very new faces that have made a huge impact. Adding: “It’s an impressive selection and, for those just starting their drinking travels, a perfect guide to great bars you should be ticking off along the way.”

Not a single bar in San Francisco?
Not Heaven’s Dog, Bar Agricole, Cantina, La Mar, Comstock, Elixir, Rickhouse, Absinthe, Burritt Room, Slanted Door, Perbacco, Harry Denton’s Starlight Room, Bourbon & Branch, 111 Minna, Royal Exchange, Etiquette Lounge….
Really?
[...] only did it not rank among the world’s top 50 bars according to a Drinks International survey, neither did any drinking hole in China. Guess which places had the most top bars? Easy one. New [...]
Bubba’s in Barbados is the 23rd best bar in the world? You could have fooled me. I was there less than a month ago and it was a bland sports bar with rubbish service. The air conditioning was refreshing at least, but I’ve got at least 23 better bars just within 5 minutes of my office.
Bubb’s in Barbados is the equivalent of a Walkabout in the UK, except Walkabout is better.
Bert’s Bar, Barbados? Always loved it, but it’s a dive bar that’s open when everywhere else is shut. It does not belong on this list.
I love Barbados, love the people and especially love their rum; but their bars in terms of cocktails are shocking.
No Purl, London? No Tommy’s Bar, San Francisco?
Em…..Cant really take this listing at all seriously considering the most consistent, international award winning bar at The Merchant in Belfast isn’t even mentioned, I mean come on, who you trying to fool ? I think we’re all aware that The Merchant has set the standard globally over the past five years. Not even a mention ?
Hi Mal,
Thanks for your comment. We’ve had a lot of feedback on this list, some good and some not so great… many readers have said similar things about the Merchant and other bars they feel should be recognised.
Just want to make it clear, this is Drinks International’s list, which we have featured as a news piece, and as such we don’t necessarily agree with it in full either.
Cheers
Andy
Hi Andy,
yeah I was totally aware of that, never been a huge fan of Drinks International, there like the bankers of the drinks trade !!!
